This weekend saw the release of Civil War, the much-anticipated new movie set in an alternate universe in which the United States is grappling with extreme political polarization (thank goodness it’s only a movie!), mainly due to the actions of a brutal authoritarian president played by Nick Offerman. If the plan was to further distance himself from Parks and Recreation’s Ron Swanson, mission accomplished, Nick.
It’s not just a clever title, the movie is literally about another American Civil War. But the story is intentionally vague, offering no explanations for how the war began exactly — or how Texas and California teamed up to become the Oscar Madison and Felix Unger of this brutal conflict.
Our condolences to any Blockbuster customers who thought that Kramer vs. Kramer would be a perfect pick for family movie night.
The art of the movie poster is one of those underappreciated mediums that has been largely diminished in the last 10 years of generic, hyper-corporate cover art that gives potential audience members little more impression of a film beyond the floating heads of its stars staring in different directions. Long gone are the days when moody, dramatic drawings of Humphrey Bogart and his femme fatale adorned cinemas and drew in audiences with evocative images and hyperbolic taglines. Today, the walls of most movie theaters are about as enticing as the decorations at the dentist’s office for how bland, cut-and-pasted and A.I.-esque “now playing” posters have become.
