Netflix Should Let Jacqueline Novak Do Anything She Wants, Forever

Whenever a movie targeted toward female audiences is a big box-office success, analysts and commentators react as though it’s never happened before. Barbie, the Twilight saga, Bridesmaids, Mamma Mia — all were treated as though they’d come out of nowhere and were once-in-a-generation freak occurrences that couldn’t possibly be repeated. Female audiences are underestimated on TV too, even though two of its longest-running drama series, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Grey’s Anatomy, are mostly watched by women. Typically, stand-up comedy is perceived to skew male — particularly on Netflix, which has not only had to settle a lawsuit regarding its underpayment of Mo’Nique but also, within the last month, premiered two comedy specials by men that were met with vocal disapproval.

Anyone who has ever glanced at the novelty bong shelf in a head shop knows that there is a serious intersection of South Park fans and daily pot smokers. From the introduction of Towelie in Season Five to the aforementioned overgrown arc in more recent seasons, marijuana manufacturing and consumption is a constant topic for comedy on the long-running series, and the bright colors, crass humor and abundance of over-the-top musical numbers makes the cartoon an easy sell for the average stoner.
